The toxic effect of silver has been known for a long time. With increasing resistance of microorganisms against antibiotics, the use of silver gains importance in medical areas. In burn units patients are treated with wound-dressings and creams containing silver.
Nanomaterials like nanosilver can have new and different characteristics. Until today little is known about possible side effects of nanomaterials towards humans. Substances that are categorised as well-tolerated can exhibit toxic side effects, if they are present as nanomaterial.
Aim of this study is to investigate concerns that are associated with nanosilver referring to long-term effects in human.
Furthermore the possible occurrence of bacterial resistance against silver and nanosilver will be examined.
